Another Successful Midlands Golf Day

Another hugely enjoyable SOS Midlands Golf Day was experienced by over 130 keen golfers last Thursday at the Ullesthorpe Court Hotel and Golf Club. The weather was fine  and the course and hotel in great condition as usual. Grateful thanks to SOS East Midlands Regional Director Gary Welsh (and wife Sarah) for the huge effort they put in to making the day so enjoyable and run so smoothly, and also to Andy Thompson of SOS. The much sought after “Referees Trophy” was won by Jon Davis (pictured second from the right) and his victorious Six Nations team and was presented with their award by England International Tim Stimpson and top referee Ashley Rowden. Grateful thanks too  to all our sponsors on the day and throughout the year.

It was also a great opportunity for SOS to thank all the wonderful referees present, for what they do for the game and how much they support SOS Kit Aid throughout the year. The customary Q&A was kindly run by Wayne Barnes and Premiership football referees and Premier Rugby referees and was much enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone for coming and supporting us. PLEASE join us next year when it will be the 10th anniversary of our Midlands Golf Day!

Pease Note our inaugural SOS Northern Golf Day takes place on Friday 5th July at Staining Lodge Golf Course, nr Blackpool. Please contact  Andy Thompson on if you would like to come!

SOS KitAid Visits Ukraine

SOS Chief Executive John Broadfoot made an official SOS visit to Odessa in Ukraine recently to see for himself how SOS donated kit is actually being used in action and also to meet members of the Ukraine Rugby Federation face to face, to improve communications and find out in more detail their exact future kit requirements. SOS has supplied Ukraine with much valuable rugby kit for over 15 years. He is pleased to report that both senior and junior Ukraine rugby are in great shape.

The Ukraine Rugby Federation are to be congratulated in getting rugby into over 70 schools(up from 6 schools five years ago) and, in beating Sweden at the weekend, their National Team has now been promoted into the next division above for next season. John had the great pleasure to attend two Rugby Festivals as well - one junior, one golden oldies. The junior festival was quite brilliant, keeping the youngsters fully entertained and playing much rugby. It was great too to see a golden oldies team wearing XXXL donated SOS shirts, and whilst still stretching them a little, put them to good use. Well done everyone involved in Odessa from Oleg Etnarovycz, head of rugby in Odessa, and tournament organiser Marina, who is a brilliant teacher too, to all the Odessa rugby management.

Pictured with John are Ukraine Vice President Georgy Dzhangiryan on his far right and Odessa rugby chief and Federation member Oleg Etnarovycz in the centre who paid tribute to SOS Kit Aid and kindly said what a great difference SOS donated kit had made over the 15 years SOS has been supplying them. As Ukraine is expanding rapidly, discussions took place on SOS doubling the number of annual kit deliveries to 8 plus new items of kit were requested too. It is some time since SOS paid a visit due to budget constrictions but these trip are invaluable in ensuring we send the right kit to meet their rapidly changing and expanding needs and to ensure our SOS kit is being used to the full. Needless to say the hospitality was superb and the true spirit of rugby is alive and well in Ukraine. We look forward to supplying them for the next 15 years. UK SOS kit donors can rest assured that our SOS donated kit is being put to great use in developing rugby in Ukraine and the future for their rugby is very bright. Good luck next season in the higher league and may many more new schools be brought on board.

John was also able to renew acquaintances with representatives of the Moldovan Rugby Federation who had a team in the Golden Oldies Tournament. They are going through a tough time currently and have recently elected a new President but we will continue to support their great rugby initiatives through their transition.

A Marvellous Donation from Whitland RFC

SOS Kit Aid were delighted to receive another marvellous rugby kit donation from Welsh Club Whitland RFC last weekend. Pictured with Ken Thomas, SOS Wales Director, are the girls and officials of Whitland RFC and Welsh ladies rugby international Sioned Harries. Sioned held a masterclass for the girls that was enjoyed by all. Isuzu are wonderful sponsors of Welsh rugby and here they demonstrate their desire to promote welsh rugby at all levels including the grass roots of the game. Good luck girls in the future - you could not have a better example than Sioned to follow !

BT Volunteers Get Packing

This merry band of wonderful volunteers from British Telecom very kindly donated their valuable time to an invaluable SOS kit packing exercise at Stevenage recently. Led by Glyn Dove (centre in the back row) the boys attacked the unpacked kit with relish, much kit was packed, and a good time was had by all.  This really is the unglamorous part of kit collection but essential to correctly sort and box valuable rugby kit ready for despatch to one of our 20 recipient emerging rugby countries. We are so grateful for these wonderful guys giving up their time and to BT for allowing them to do so. Gluttons for punishment, another one is being planned in a few months time !
